A few key challenges to utilizing a merged sanitary/storm sewer system were identified. One of the more significant challenges was the separate routines used to determine the inflow to the respective systems. The empirical, unit hydrograph methodology used in the sanitary sewer model does not interact with the deterministic, overland flow routing calculations used in the stormwater collection system model. If a new model were to be constructed where one methodology could be applied to both systems (e.g. the unit hydrograph methodology applied to the storm sewer model, or the runoff routing applied to the sanitary sewer model), the merged model would be much more effective and useful.
