Outreach to and engagement of stakeholders has become increasingly important for water and wastewater utilities. In today's dynamic environment, it is important that utility professionals use the most effective and dynamic communication tools available to connect with stakeholders and communities on an ongoing basis. This paper and presentation will demonstrate the value that social media can provide for utilities using real-life examples and will provide best practices of successful use of social media by those in the water and public works industry, such as DC Water. In addition, insights will be shared from studies and surveys completed by University of Denver and Stanford University students under the direction of CH2M HILL, which specifically looked into the value of social media for water and wastewater utilities.
