Abstract:

The development and application of composite capacity charts has been ongoing for the past decade in Brown and Caldwell projects. We have developed a series of science-based procedures that interrogate all treatment plant unit processes through a series of stress tests and modeling, the results of which are integrated into a graphical progressive disclosure of how plant capacity changes with increasing flow and loads as a function of the capacity of individual unit processes reaching their respective capacities. Examples of the application of the composite capacity chart are given in the paper. These procedures have demonstrated savings to municipalities of 100s millions in retrieved capacity.
