The addition of external carbon sources for denitrification becomes necessary for wastewater treatment plants to meet more and more stringent effluent nitrogen limits. The concerns regarding the safety, operational issues and cost of methanol motivated the use of non-flammable alternative carbon-sources for biological denitrification. All major physical-chemical property as well as biodegradability and kinetics and stoichiometric constants for MicroCg™, MicroCglycerin™, and a mixture of 80:20 methanol:MicroCglycerin™ were determined. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the use of MicroCg™ and MicroCglycerin™ for denitrification processes, with MicroCglycerin™ having the highest maximum denitrification rate. The maximum growth rates measured at 20 °C and 10 °C for MicroCg™ and MicroCglycerin™ were greater than the one found for methanol. The COD/N ratio, an indicator for COD usage efficiency for denitrification, was higher for MicroCgG™ than methanol, but was very similar to methanol for MicroCglycerin™ and the mixture.
