Abstract:

The Water Environment Federation(WEF) formed the Community of Sustainable Practice to bring together water and wastewater professionals interested in sustainability in order to identify, and capitalize upon, opportunities to collect knowledge and ideas from the water and wastewater industry for the purpose of advancing sustainability. Subsequently, a Sustainable Utilities Task Force was formed among water and wastewater utility managers and consultants. This Task Force, headed by Peter Ruffier, Andrew Kricun and Killian Tobin, has developed, with the assistance of WEF professional staff, a web-based compendium of successful and sustainable utility practices. The purpose of this compendium is to (1) gather successful and sustainable utility practices throughout the industry, (2) organize these practices into categories that will facilitate recovery by interested parties and (3) facilitate dissemination of these practices to other utilities accordingly. In this way, the positive benefit of each successful practice, currently limited to the sphere of the originating utility, can be multiplied many times over when it is implemented by other utilities throughout the water and wastewater industry. WEF's Sustainable Utilities Task Force believes that this compendium will result in significant, long term and sustained environmental benefit through the sharing and dissemination of successful and sustainable utility practices across the water and wastewater industry.
