At the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, a staff initiated Engineering Mentoring Program was developed with management support to address workforce engagement, recruitment, retention, and retirement issues. The Mentoring Program was designed to promote professional development of new engineering hires using the concept of one-on-one mentoring. Its goals were to transfer agency and industry knowledge to younger staff, improve retention of new hires, and to foster workforce engagement and job satisfaction through service and helping others. While still relatively new, the Mentoring Program has been met with enthusiasm from management and participating staff. The program helps new employees more quickly become knowledgeable about the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County and adjust to work at the agency. It also gives senior-level employees an opportunity for service and to demonstrate leadership by being mentors.
