The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has experienced tremendous growth since the mid-1970's resulting in significant overloading of its existing sewerage system. Master planning determined that the best long-term wastewater collection and conveyance solution was construction of a deep tunnel sewer system to relieve the existing system and to provide added capacity to accommodate further growth. Given the size and complexity of this massive investment, the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) elected to proceed with a physical model study. The model study aimed to validate and refine certain design concepts associated with the drop shaft structures with an emphasis on hydraulic performance and the proposed odor control approach. This paper focuses on this physical model study and its related investigations.
