Cleaning large diameter sewer interceptors in urban areas is a challenging undertaking for any municipality. The Lower Jones Falls Interceptor traverses a densely developed urban area, including 3,500 feet adjacent to and through Penn Station, close to active railroad tracks and under a multi-story parking garage. Through good planning and close coordination with rail authorities, Baltimore removed and safely disposed of over 1,365 metric tons (1500 tons) of sediment and debris that accumulated in this major interceptor since its construction in the early 20th century. The project was completed on time and under budget, with minimal impact to the community and railroad yard.
