The Manchester, NH wastewater treatment facility's (WWTF) fluidized bed sludge incinerator provides thermal destruction of the WWTF's sludge. This eliminates the need for offsite sludge hauling and disposal while providing beneficial heating of some of the WWTF buildings in the winter through an air to water heat exchanger (economizer). The WWTF has no back up incinerator, so reliable operation and minimization of incinerator shutdowns for inspection and/or repair is critical to minimize the WWTF's operating costs. In 2009 construction began on a number of incinerator component upgrades. Due to the high cost of off-site sludge disposal as well as heating WWTF buildings in the winter months, minimizing the construction duration was paramount. This paper describes the background, design, and construction phases of the upgrade project including:

Approaches used to minimize incinerator down time

Completed project benefits

Lessons learned for a utility undertaking an incinerator upgrade project
