Abstract:

Diminishing reliability of imported water supplies has motivated the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to adopt the City of Los Angeles's Water Supply Action Plan, “Securing L.A.'s Water Supply.” The City's vision calls for a substantial increase in the use of recycled water to reduce L.A.'s reliance on imported water. To meet this near-term challenge and plan for expanding reuse in the future, LADWP has partnered with the City's Department of Public Works to develop Recycled Water Master planning documents. The Recycled Water Master planning documents include several tasks, including Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) Treatment Pilot Study, which is the topic of this paper. Two commercially available advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used in the treatment of drinking water and in indirect potable reuse, peroxone (O3/H2O2) and photolysis of hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), are under consideration to remove organic contaminants of concern (CEC).
