Lessons Learned Rehabilitating Large Diameter Tunnel Structures
Abstract:The City of Austin, Texas placed the Govalle Wastewater Tunnel into service in 1988. The Govalle Tunnel is an approximately 8 mile long, 96-inch internal diameter, cast-in-place concrete tunnel installed at an average depth of 100 feet below ground surface. The Govalle Tunnel began to experience severe corrosion problems within 10 years of being placed into service. Inspections revealed systemic corrosion throughout the tunnel and shaft structures. Rehabilitation has successfully been completed on the first project using calcium aluminate to restore the corroded concrete and coating the calcium aluminate with epoxy to prevent further corrosion
