Revitalizing Downtown Infrastructure – Integrating Sewer Rehabilitation with Streetscape Improvements in Wilmington, N.C.
Abstract:Recognizing the importance of sound underground infrastructure to their downtown revitalization initiatives, the City of Wilmington, N.C. and the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) integrated utilities rehabilitation into the planning, design, and construction of the recently completed North Front Street Improvements project. The purpose of this integrated project was to support increased economic activity within a key commercial corridor of the City while improving utility service and minimizing disruption to businesses and the public during construction. Public coordination, pedestrian access and control, and unforeseen conditions were all challenges to the project.
