Abstract:

UV systems validated today with the most recent and advanced techniques are far more efficient than similar systems validated just a few years ago. The knowledge that has been gained since the release of the UV Disinfection Guidance Manual in 2006 has resulted in advanced techniques for the validation, design and operation of UV systems in an effort to increase the accuracy of dose-monitoring strategies and maximize the operating efficiency. Numerous UV facilities that were designed with older validation protocols or in accordance with elevated dose requirements have undertaken various approaches to implement modern control philosophies developed from these advanced techniques. Substantial savings can be recognized through the application of modern dose-control algorithms, allowing for efficient UV system operation while safely attaining the required disinfection to protect the public health.
