Abstract:

Finding a sustainable solution for the disposal of biosolids is a problem faced by many municipalities. In many areas land application is un-economic and can involve trucking long distances. Land-filling of such material is also becoming increasingly difficult as landfill capacity becomes more and more constrained and at the same time, wastewater facilities are under increasing pressure to reduce operation costs and carbon footprint. Additionally, wastewater treatment plants that are anticipating plant growth or increases in biosolids in future years face a critical decision to find a solution that fits the long term capacity requirements. Gasification can offer a reliable, sustainable solution to biosolids disposal. Using a renewable fuel available on-site allows wastewater treatment facilities to deal with variable biosolids disposal and energy costs more effectively.
