Abstract:

Cyclic aeration is a biological nutrient removal (BNR) process that promotes denitrification by cycling aeration on and off in activated sludge basins. In this study, cyclic aeration was implemented in a full-scale activated sludge treatment plant with existing equipment, high average flows, and without mechanical mixers in the aeration basins. Cyclic aeration was evaluated with anoxic phases of 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes and a constant aerobic phase of 90 minutes. A 150 minute cycle time (90 minutes aerobic and 60 minutes anoxic) was found to achieve the highest total nitrogen removal efficiency. Total nitrogen removal efficiency for the study ranged from 6 to 33 percent and the specific denitrification rate (SDNR) ranged from 2.2 × 10−3 to 9.2 × 10−3 g NO 3-N /g MLSS·d. Implementation challenges associated with application of cyclic aeration in a full-scale treatment facility are discussed.
