Abstract:

A wastewater management strategy was implemented at the Biogen Idec North Carolina biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility by developing and using a process wastewater model to identify opportunities for process evaluations, source segregation, source reduction, and cost avoidance. The model uses a stoichiometric evaluation of each compound in the fermentation and purification processes for specific products to calculate the mass loading of individual equipment cleaning, material preparation, process use, and discharge steps. A mass balance was completed around each production step to calculate the wastewater flow and load of each product. The model output was used as the basis for developing a wastewater management strategy that resulted in reduction of the peak nitrogen discharge by 240 kg/day, peak total phosphorus discharge by 140 kg/day, average chloride discharge by 130 kg/day, and avoidance of 14M capital and 1M annual operating costs.
