Abstract:

A 2.0 MGD IFAS demonstration process was operated to evaluate nitrogen removal performance and to develop design criteria for a full plant upgrade. As part of this study, a number of additional sampling and analysis efforts were targeted at localizing AOB and NOB activity within the process, measuring the impacts of oxygen and substrate mass transfer limitations, and monitoring nitrifier kinetics in both attached and suspended growth biomass phases over a 12 month period. The results presented here focus on the calibration of a simulation model to the data set as a whole, including process performance and a wide range of kinetic and mass transfer experiments. It was necessary to adjust detachment rates to preferentially decrease NOB release from the biofilm. A sensitivity analysis revealed the clear importance of the mass transfer boundary layer and demonstrated that most of the resistance to mass transfer exists in the external boundary layer.
