The Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) is an indirect potable reuse project located in Fountain Valley, California. This project takes secondary effluent produced by the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) and treats it to beyond drinking water standards to produced distilled quality water. This high quality water is then used to in a seawater intrusion barrier and for augmentation of groundwater supplies in Orange County California. This highly treated water allows the Orange County Water District to offset the amount of imported water and local river water needed to replenish the local groundwater aquifer. The GWRS is the largest indirect potable reuse project in the United States and as such uses some of the most advanced treatment technologies available including microfiltration (MF), reverse osmosis (RO), and Ultraviolet light (UV).
