The Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWWTP) has separate stage carbonaceous and nitrification/denitrification activated sludge systems. An evaluation of aeration alternatives was performed to assess options for upgrading the existing system. Because of the relatively high loading rates and low operation solids retention time for the secondary system, the selection of alphaF factors was a significant variable in the evaluation. To allow additional refinement of the aeration calculations to incorporate the effect of diffuser layout geometry and mixing intensity on oxygen transfer, the standard BioWin software was used to evaluate the system with revised aeration parameters to approximate the aeration model developed by Johnson (1996). Dynamic modeling was used to assess the impact of a variable wastestream on the aeration system as well as the biomass inventory. The dynamic modeling showed shifts in the oxygen transfer requirements, but negligible impact on the effluent quality.
