Denitrification also requires carbon, and the system denitrification rates are higher if the influent carbon is soluble. Corrosion control and odor control techniques used in the collection system, which hinder VFA production or destroy VFA, can have an adverse impact on the BNR process. Specifically, the use of nitrate and oxygen to stop anaerobic fermentation not only stops fermentation, but biological consumption of nitrate and oxygen converts soluble biodegradable COD into biomass.
