Abstract:

A sensitivity analysis is conducted using a process model that considers the biofilm biochemical transformation processes, mass transfer resistances internal and external to the biofilm; and bacterial competition for space inside the biofilm along with the kinetics of the suspended growth component of IFAS systems. Results of the sensitivity analysis are compared with field trial observations. The paper proposes a design convention that considers the calculated nitrification safety factor to determine the configuration of the IFAS system design.
