VA SYD is a publicly owned organization and serves around half a million people in southern Sweden with water and wastewater services, VA SYD has over the years developed a close cooperation with suppliers, contractors and universities. This co-operation model was fundamental when the upgrading concept for nitrogen removal was conceived for the Sjölunda WWTP in the 1990ies.

The process led to the establishment of two novel biofilm process concepts, the high rate NTF and the MBBR process for post-denitrification. The development tradition still prevails and in the last years the development of a novel Discfilter technique for suspended solids removal from a MBBR plant for denitrification was conceived at the Sjölunda WWTP.

The VA SYD model of leading edge practice and research where different stakeholders co-operate has proven to be fruitful for all parties. In the near future the plants in the VA SYD region will have to be refurbished, and upgraded for new requirements. In this work the R&D tradition of VA SYD will be a strategic asset for the future.
