Abstract:

With the increasing ability to collect and maintain vast quantities of data, flow monitoring has become a vital component in the tool box that sewer utilities reach into for the management, maintenance, and capital improvement programs of their collection system. With the increasing requirements of National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits and consent decrees, flow monitoring programs are can exceeding $1 million and serve as the back bone of billion dollar programs. The questions to be answered now are: “What can I do with my existing flow monitoring data or do I need additional data?” and “What is the most efficient way to collect, review, and use flow monitoring data for my collection system?”. This paper presents three case studies and compares the benefits and limitations of three tiered methods and recent trends in flow monitoring programs:

Tier 1 - using historic data

Tier 2 - collecting and providing finalized data to the end user

Tier 3 - collecting and providing raw data to the end user
