Large quantities of biomass are produced in the process of maintaining public green sites such as river areas, parks and green belts in urban areas. In Japan, most of this biomass is treated and disposed of as waste.

In this study, we measured the characteristics of biomass produced by maintaining public green sites to obtain information when utilizing the biomass as supplementary fuel for sewage sludge incineration. We also conducted incineration testing of the new combustion system consists of a pressurized fluidized bed incinerator (PFBI) and turbocharger in a pilot plant to verify the energy-saving effects of burning a mixture of sewage sludge and plant waste.

As a result of physical and chemical analysis of the plant waste produced in the process of public green sites maintenance, it is expected that most of plant waste can utilize as supplementary fuel for sewage sludge combustion. During the trial incineration in a pilot plant, both the combustion temperature and pressure inside the PFBI were stable. And it is clear that it is possible to cut the quantity of heavy oil used as supplementary fuel by incinerating sewage sludge mixed with plant wastes.
