Odor Removal Using Palygorskites in a Fixed Bed Adsorber

Abstract:

Adsorption of ammonia (NH3) on palygorskite was investigated in a fixed bed adsorber. The raw palygorskite and pretreated one with HCl of 3 mol l-1 at 50 °C for 24 hours (HCl-352) or NaOH of 1 mol l-1 at 50 °C for 48 hours (NaOH-154) were studied. These were characterized by XRD and FTIR. Adsorption experiments were conducted at different concentration and temperature. HCl-352 performed better adsorption ability with adsorption capacity of 19 mg g for NH3 of 4500 ppm at 25 °C comparing with raw material and NaOH-154. Adsorption isotherms of raw material and HCl-352 were described by Freundlich equation, whereas that of NaOH-154 was fitted by both Freundlich and Langmuir equations.
