Foul odors from sewer systems can be prevented using biofilter beds as an alternative to physical or chemical processes. These biofilter beds offer many benefits for this application, including the ability to blend in with the surrounding environment. When located in a public place, the system should be designed with respect to the values and special needs of the neighborhood. This paper will offer design recommendations and discuss a recent biofilter bed construction in historic Leeper Park in South Bend, Indiana.
