The Energy – Water Nexus and Your Utility
Abstract:Issues related to the energy-water nexus – the intersection where each resource significantly impacts the other – are playing out in several ways that directly relate to the ten attributes of a successfully managed water utility. Largely connected to the broad spectrum of sustainability, the topic also touches on financial viability, infrastructure stability, stakeholder support and others. With water/energy issues clearly on the federal agenda with likely increased attention going forward, this research will provide a perspective on the state of the industry's practices. Insights from this research will inform how an individual utility might re-shape its thinking as it moves forward.
This work is based on original research; three megatrends form the backdrop:
The nexus of energy and water in the impact of each resource upon the other will become increasingly important to both energy and water utilities
With the popular press now grasping the value of water – “Water is the new oil” – public scrutiny will increase over time
The federal government will take an increasingly proactive role in efficient use of resources
