Abstract:This paper summarizes the development of a decision support framework to address sustainable energy management in the water/wastewater industry. The framework was developed as part of the Water Research Foundation project 4090 “Decision Support System for Sustainable Energy Management.” This paper outlines the key decisions and barriers to utility energy management and provides an overview of an international workshop held in Denver, CO on May 19–20, 2009. The work in this paper represents a 17 utility, international cooperative project, aimed at creating a Decision Support System (DSS). When concluded, the assembled tool is expected to help identify energy, greenhouse, and cost-saving approaches that will be of wide practical benefit to water utilities.
