Magnetic Ion Exchange Treatment for Pulp and Paper Mill Effluent Treatment and Reuse
Abstract:Australia has been impacted by a severe drought during the last eight years and a significantly reduced availability of fresh water is increasing economic and social pressure on industrial users to reduce water usage and increase water efficiency. Pulp and paper mills consume large volumes of fresh water while wastewater generated by manufacturing operations is highly colored and has a high concentration of organic contaminants making recycling difficult. A magnetic ion exchange (MIEX®) process has been evaluated at laboratory and pilot scale for removing color and organic contaminants from these wastewaters. Laboratory and pilot scale testing performed on wastewaters from a pulp mill, a newsprint mill and a recycled paper manufacturer demonstrated color reductions of 80–98% and dissolved organic carbon reductions of 70–80%, producing treated effluent of a quality suitable for reuse. The world's first commercial-scale application of this technology for whitewater treatment and recycling has subsequently been installed at the recycled paper manufacturer.
