Improving Grit Removal through CFD Analysis

As part of a capital improvement plan, the Greater Augusta Utility District (GAUD) identified the need for improvements to the aerated grit chambers at the GAUD wastewater treatment plant. A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model (Fluent version 6.3) was conducted to evaluate options for improving grit-removal performance, including an evaluation of the existing tank and proposed modifications to improve grit-removal performance of the process. Five tank configurations were modeled. Based on the overall grit system evaluation and CFD analysis, the following improvements were recommended to the existing aerated grit tanks and supporting systems: (1) remove the existing full-width aluminum baffles and (2) install a new fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) baffle in each tank, to run longitudinally down the length of the tank. This paper demonstrates that CFD analysis can be used to evaluate and optimize flow through aerated grit chambers for improved grit removal as a low-cost alternative to tank replacement
