Environmental Technology Verification of a Biofilm Process for High Efficiency Nitrogen Removal From Wastewater

Several potential clients have asked Krüger Kaldnes if the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) process has been through Environmental Technology Verification (ETV). This prompted Krüger Kaldnes to use the combined denitrification MBBR process as a pilot case in the Nordic ETV project (NOWATECH). Full-scale testing demonstrated that the combined denitrification MBBR process can easily remove 90 % of total N at reasonable operating costs. The external carbon source consumption was 1.8 g CODadded/g total N removed over the biological stage. Mixing energy was 10 W/m3 reactor volume in the anoxic reactor 1. The average air supply to aerobic reactors was 0.80 Nm3/m3 reactor volume·h, corresponding to an energy demand of 32 W/m3 reactor volume. Overall energy consumption (mixers, pumps and blowers) for the plant was 0.245 kWh/m3 wastewater treated. Median effluent concentrations of 2.9 mg total N/L and 1.5 mg total inorganic N/L were achieved. All vendor claims were verified.
