Monitoring of Membrane Bioreactors for Wastewater Treatment Using 2D-Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Abstract:

In this work a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for wastewater treatment is monitored using 2D-fluorescence spectroscopy as a fingerprint of the system status. Fluorescence maps were correlated with the operational parameters of the MBR using non-mechanistic methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and projection to latent structures (PLS), for process monitoring and optimisation. The 2D-fluorescence technique was used as a tool for monitoring the performance of a pilot MBR. It was found that the combination of the 2Dfluorescence data with selected operational and performance variables captures additional information about the biological system status and substantially enhances MBR modeling and performance prediction.
