Disinfection Performance of Iron (VI) for Wastewater Disinfection, Reuse, and Wetland Restoration

Current wastewater disinfection practices utilize chlorination at the New Orleans Eastbank Wastewater Treatment Plant. However, one alternative to chlorination for this location includes ferrate (FeO4 2-). Ferrate disinfection byproducts include ferric hydroxide, a micronutrient for vegetation and a chemical coagulant. Furthermore, this iron species does not produce the disinfection by-products commonly associated with chlorination practices. Its resulting oxidative by-products are not biocidal or carcinogic, which could lessen the impacts to human health and the environment. Bench-scale pilot testing was performed in an array of plant operating conditions to monitor pH, ORP, temperature, and suspended solids. The reason for this study is to denote the differences between chlorination, currently used in New Orleans, and ferrate disinfection in Bayou Beinville wetland restoration.

This research elucidates the efficacy of ferrate for disinfection by determining minimal contact time, reaction kinetics, and dose for disinfection as applied to municipal wastewater effluent. Data will be presented on population changes of fecal coliform, enterococci. Processing will be optimized for varying plant-operating conditions to assess pH and suspended solid impact on disinfection performance.
