Ponds Provide Sustainable Treatment for Honoka'a
Abstract:The current wastewater treatment system at the community of Honoka‘a, Hawai‘i consists of two unaerated pond cells in series, followed by disposal in injection wells. The community has a number of large capacity cesspools that are required to be connected to a collection system and treated with the current community flows, which will increase the flow from 208 m3/d to 757 m3/d (55,000 gpd to 200,000 gpd). To develop a process to treat the additional flow, several mechanical-based alternatives were considered and compared to modification of the existing ponds. Deepening and partitioning the two cells into four deeper cells provides longer detention time and improved treatment. Partial-mix aeration added to the first two cells provides the needed treatment for the increased flow at the lowest capital and operating cost.
