Impact of Membranes on Refractory Dissolved Organic Nitrogen

This 800-day study assesses the impact of membranes, anaerobic hydraulic retention time (HRT), and feed characteristics on effluent dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) from four different biological nutrient removal systems, a patented MBR (PMBR), a conventional A2O, a UCT MBR (UMBR) and modified PMBR with two different feeds: synthetic wastewater and municipal wastewater at three different anaerobic HRTs. The major findings were that PMBR achieved 0.3 mg/L lower DON than the A2O system due to membrane blockage. The reduction by membranes accounted for 27% of the DON in the membrane tank. The effluent DON exhibited a cyclical pattern similar to soluble microbial products. However, DON was more affected by the feed characteristics than other operational conditions i.e. anaerobic HRTs of 1.3–1.8 hr, total system HRTs of 6–8 hr and denitrification capacity.
