A proprietary vacuum distillation system, RCAST® was demonstrated to rapidly and reproducibly remove ammonia from salt solutions, municipal centrate and filtrate, and landfill leachate. Dependence of the rate of ammonia removal on temperature and pH was defined and shown to vary as expected for removal of free ammonia from solution. Ammonia reduction follows first order kinetics, which implies that very high-strength ammonia streams can be economically processed by this system.
