The model-based predicative aeration control system outlined herein provides airflow set points to automated aeration basins and blower systems, which allows for more complete correction of nutrient and hydraulic loading disturbances typically experienced at wastewater treatment plants. This proposed control rule utilizes online in-situ ammonia analyzers to characterize wastewater loading. This loading information is used in conjunction with dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors to estimate the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and calculate the required airflow to achieve a specified DO set-point. Preliminary model simulation studies affirm the above control method as an improvement upon traditional proportional-integral (PI) feedback control methods. A control system utilizing this method has been installed at Poinciana WWTP #5 in Polk County, Florida, for evaluation.
