Abstract:

Stakeholder education, consultation and involvement are of paramount importance in the acceptance and success of biosolids management programs. For over a decade, biosolids produced throughout the Pacific Northwest have been used successfully in comprehensive recycling programs to fertilize agricultural land, create and restore ecosystems, produce landscaping soil products for public use and reclaim disturbed land. King County, Metro Vancouver and SYLVIS Environmental are responsible for several successful and long-term biosolids management programs in the Pacific Northwest. Community involvement and stakeholder support of biosolids use has been instrumental in the success of these programs and will be demonstrated through the presentation of differing approaches and case study examples. These case studies highlight the importance of developing partnerships with industry, non-profit organizations, First Nations, and government agencies in achieving mutual objectives. Consultation activities include accurate and comprehensive identification of all stakeholders, understanding their biosolids management questions and concerns, and selecting effective approaches to address these questions and concerns in a clear and professional manner.
