Bench Scale Evaluation of Two Enhanced Digestion Processes: Enhanced Enzymic Hydrolysis and Dual Digestion
The objective of the present research is to evaluate Enhanced Enzymic Hydrolysis (EEH) and Dual Digestion (DD) processes, in terms of volatile solids destruction, biogas production, digested biosolids odor, pathogen destruction and the potential of pathogen reactivation. EEH process achieved similar performance compared to a conventional mesophilic anaerobic digestion having a longer retention time (16.2 d versus 20 d). Both of the processes performed well in terms of odor reduction when compared to conventional digestion. Effluents from both processes met the 40 CFR Part 503 regulations. E. coli density measured by standard culturing methods was almost three to four orders of magnitude lower when compared with qPCR technique suggesting that some of the bacteria are perhaps not being cultured.
