Enhancing the Energy Efficiency of Wastewater Aeration

Aeration systems controlled by optical technology dissolved oxygen probes and variable speed drives can achieve significant energy savings at wastewater treatment plants. Partnerships with product manufacturers and small to mid-size utilities were developed to “try out” the newly improved optical dissolved oxygen sensor technology along with variable speed drives to automate aeration in activated sludge wastewater treatment systems. Before and during installation of the aeration control equipment, project-specific electric meters were installed to determine energy usage and demand and document any load changes and energy efficiencies.

Four project demonstrations were completed. Energy savings in demand ranged from 14% to 40%. Energy usage results were varied. Half of the host facilities used more energy while the other half used less. Average demand reductions of 7 kW to 52 kW (14% to 40%) were demonstrated.
