Abstract:

A statistical evaluation of influent characteristics along with a whole-plant process simulation were used to evaluate a number of key design parameters with varying influent flow and loads to determine the overall wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) capacity using risk-based criteria. The goal of the risk-based evaluation is to quantify the level of uncertainty existing within the WWTP and determine the appropriate design parameters to use when calculating the overall WWTP capacity. This approach takes into account the uncertainties in the influent and major operating parameters, and allows the use of probability distributions to determine capacity.

The risk-based evaluation of the WWTP resulted in a 12 percent increase in overall capacity. This allowed for the rerating of the facility from 34.4 ML/d (9.1 mgd) to a 38.6-ML/d (10.2- mgd) WWTP. This defers a significant amount of capital investment for the municipality as immediate capacity improvements are not required.
