The Kinetics Of Anaerobic And Aerobic Carbon And Phosphorus Transformations For A Septic Wastewater With Varying Propionate:Acetate Ratios
Changes in the Propionate:Acetate ratio did not affect the overall uptake rate of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) but propionate was preferentially sequestered at a higher rate than acetic acid regardless of the Pro:Ace ratio. The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with the higher Pro:Ace ratio (Pro SBR) had higher net phosphorus (P) removal and a lower effluent P concentration (3.3 mg/L versus 5.8 mg/L from an influent of 25 mg/L) than did the system with a low Pro:Ace ratio (Ace SBR). This occurred because of a significantly lower rate/extent of anaerobic P release and a significantly higher rate/extent of aerobic P uptake. This occurred in spite of the much lower PHA content of the Pro SBR biomass.
