abstract = "As part of the WateReuse Foundation Project WRF 02-009 - Innovative Reclaimed Water Treatment Technologies, a pilot study was conducted on the Purifics (London, Ontario) UV/TiO2 PhotoCat® process. The purpose of this pilot study (performed at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant) was to investigate the effectiveness of this triple barrier method of treatment at 1) destroying both trace organics and microbial constituents in a tertiary recycled water, and 2) to compare the energy demand/cost of this process to other conventional disinfection and advanced oxidation processes. The PhotoCat® system was proven to destroy bacteria and virus and reduce the majority of tested micro-constituents at the lower tested energy levels. Higher energy input into the system resulted in increased oxidation, as measured by destruction of micro-constituents and an increase in UVT. The PhotoCat® also demonstrated multiple barrier treatment, based upon proven removals and reductions from both the ceramic membrane and the TiO2/UV processes.",
