A new Solids Blend Tank was recently constructed at the Salmon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant where raw sludges are blended prior to being pumped to anaerobic digesters. The tank was designed with an external pump mixing system utilizing internal nozzles. Problems with the performance of the mixing system were immediately observed during start-up. This paper will describe the combination of laboratory testing, modeling, and piping reconfiguration used to troubleshoot the process, and the improvement in mixing achieved through the design modifications.
