The Use of 3-Dimensional CFD Modelling to Evaluate Modifications to Large Centrally Scraped Secondary Clarifiers
The 350,000 m3/d Dan Region WWTP serves a population of approximately 2.0 million. The secondary treatment process has four large BNR bioreactors followed by twelve 52 m diameter, centrally scraped, secondary clarifiers. There were concerns regarding clarifier capacity as elevated effluent suspended solids concentrations were routinely observed during high flow periods. This paper details the results of a clarifier optimization study using a calibrated 3-dimensional CFD secondary clarifier model. The principal objective of the study was to develop and evaluate modifications to the existing clarifiers that could increase the clarifier capacity and improve the solids removal efficiency and effluent quality under high flow conditions. The model proved to be extremely useful at identifying weaknesses in the existing clarifier geometry, and evaluating options for addressing these weaknesses. A total of eight modifications were evaluated using the model, and the two most cost-effective modifications were subsequently implemented in two of the clarifiers. The performance of the two modified clarifiers was subsequently compared with that of two adjacent clarifiers through a series of stress tests.
