With increasing energy costs, and the need of many treatment facilities to remove nutrients sustainably, aeration blowers have become a source of major interest for reducing operating costs, especially since power for aeration air for an activated sludge treatment facility can range from 40 to 75 percent of the total plant power bill. All designers have their own methods for determining the number and size of aeration blowers. Three case studies will illustrate the evolution of a design approach for sizing aeration blowers which incorporates the use of dynamic process modeling to identify diurnal aeration needs over extended time periods.
