Planning for Operator Succession
Abstract:The Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant has served Sacramento, California since 1981. The majority of the staff was hired at start-up and there was little turnover or growth in field staff until recently. This paper describes the challenges and actions taken to replace the majority of experienced operations personnel over a five-year period. The Sacramento Regional Sanitation District's (District) efforts have resulted in a sustainable program that attracts and retains qualified new operators while also retaining valuable institutional and technical knowledge. The District is only partially through the forecasted wave of attrition that will culminate in 2009.
