IMPLEMENTATION OF SUSTAINABILITY IS A GRASSROOTS EFFORT
Abstract:ASA already has one of the nation's top sustainability records, recycling 99.5% of biosolids and reusing almost 2 billion gallons of reclaimed water each year. Like other utilities, the Alexandria Sanitation Authority (ASA) recognizes that sustainability is crucial to their future and longevity in an environment where service demands are increasing and their access to the natural and built environment are descreasing. ASA recognized that the best people to provide an answer are ASA employees. Using the Awareness, Trying, Believing, and Championing model, ASA created one of the first Sustainability Training Initiatives inclusive of all employees. The outcome of the initiative is a list of over 200 possible actions ranging from selling effluent to residents for landscaping to using 100% of digester gas for electricity. ASA's grassroots approach should be the model for other sustainability programs.
