Design decisions are being driven increasingly by considerations of greenhouse gas emissions and models can be used as part of this process. There is no single industry standard model for wastewater and so the choice of model has to be considered carefully. This paper shows that the choice of model can significantly influence the decisions made. A comprehensive model was used to evaluate potential improvements at three wastewater treatment plants in Perth, Australia, and its results were compared to the standard Australian model. In one case the choice of model did not influence the decision - all models showed that co-generation would have a beneficial impact in reducing emissions - but in another case the comprehensive model showed that running a plant at a low sludge age would not be beneficial whereas the standard models erroneously showed that it would have reduced emissions considerably.", pages = "260-263", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/wef/wefproc/2008/00002008/00000006/art00017", doi = "doi:10.2175/193864708788808401" }
