Abstract:

Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) natural drainage systems program takes an innovative approach to street design in order to reduce the negative impacts of stormwater runoff on our creeks, lakes, and the Puget Sound. SPU began the program in 1999 and has since completed five projects ranging in scale from the retrofit of a single residential block to the complete redevelopment of 129 acres of mixed-income housing. New projects in development include two Natural Drainage System (NDS) ultra-urban downtown applications.
